FAHS Students visited the Advanced Genomics Institute and the Laboratory Medicine Lab
May 15, 2025

As a part of the academic curriculum, Students of the Department of Life Sciences, FAHS, SGT University, visited the Advanced Genomics Institute and the Laboratory Medicine Lab on 13th -14th May 2025. This educational visit was organised to provide students with a practical insight into the advanced cytogenetics techniques and their application in real-world diagnostics.
The visit was highly informative, offering students an opportunity to witness and understand the critical laboratory techniques such as cell line culture, cryopreservation, and chromosomal identification. Students were introduced to the fundamental principles of various cell culturing techniques, gaining hands-on knowledge of maintaining and observing cell growth under controlled conditions.
The key highlights of the visit were observing the cell culture techniques (both Adherent and suspension culture) on the amniotic fluid sample, chromosome screening, where students observed the chromosome manually assembled and through software and band differentiation, providing a comprehensive understanding of chromosomal analysis and its significance in detecting genetic disorders. Students have observed the chromosomes of the Down syndrome sample through the FISH technique via the software after passaging. The students were given a clear understanding of the purpose and functionality of each machine, providing them with an in-depth view of the technology aspects of diagnostic procedures.
The visit was exceptionally enriching as students were able to observe real-life human samples being processed and analysed, making the experience more authentic and impactful. It bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, allowing the students to experience firsthand how diagnostic techniques are applied in real-world scenarios.
